Cody is a YouTube partner who left his “old city life” behind to explore the great outdoors. His channel also features his family and offers laughs along the way as he gives great advice to new wranglers. From T-shirts to axes, you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for from a channel dedicated to country living. You can find out what a day in Cody’s life looks like, how you can live a sustainable lifestyle and learn all about the best tools to use.

Here are a few words from Cody:
"In 2010 we made the decision to leave behind our comfortable, urban lifestyle in exchange for a primitive homestead in the rugged mountains of the Pacific Northwest. In the beginning, YouTube was a convenient way for us to share our adventure with friends and family. Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine that such a diverse and engaging community would take an interest in our channel. I've always said that the Wranglerstar channel has the best subscribers on YouTube. We are honored and humbled to have been chosen as YouTube’s “On The Rise” partner for December 2013. Thank you--we are truly blessed. We appreciate the opportunity YouTube has provided for us to live and share our modern homesteading dream."

Over the last year, we’ve seen creators across music, gaming, sports, news and more categories use the power of live video to create amazing experiences for their audiences, and build new fans.

Now, all YouTube channels that verify their account and are in good standing will be able to live stream live video to the world. We’re rolling out the feature over the next few weeks, and you can see if you have access on the YouTube account feature page or wait for Live Events to appear in your Video Manager.

To give you even more ways to connect with fans, you can now launch a Google+ Hangout on Air directly from the YouTube Live events manager. This gives you a simple way to reach your fans live and is the ideal way to to invite participants to join your show.

A Norwegian Army Dance Troupe. An Epic Split. The Fox. And a Rap Battle with an 18th century Austrian composer.

As 2013 comes to a close, these are some of the videos, channels and moments that shaped our year. While each annual list is unpredictable (what's up, Mr. Miley Cyrus impersonator), trending videos just get bigger each year. And with 80 percent of all views on YouTube coming from outside the U.S., the global community is driving pop culture unlike ever before.

You watched The Fox more than 275 million times, making it the top trending video of 2013. You also made it a top searched Halloween costume, and you’ll maybe even read it as a children’s book. You turned out in record-setting numbers to see PSY’s post-"Gangnam Style" performance. You even made more “Harlem Shake” videos than there are people in Manhattan (1.7 million videos if you’re counting).

Congratulations to the team over at Buzz60, the channel featured as our “On The Rise” partner this November. The channel and some of their best videos are featured today on our On The Rise homepage as well as the YouTube spotlight channel today.

The small team of journalists, reporters, producers, writers, editors and directors who make up Buzz60 know that time is precious in today’s world. Their videos each bring you sixty seconds on topics people are currently talking about -- all with a fun and fresh perspective. Whether it’s celebrity news about a real-life Ken and Barbie encounter, news about a street-legal electric Tron ‘lightcycle,’ or a report on a couple who took “Breaking Bad”-themed engagement photos, you’ll find these news bites relevant and entertaining. This small team works at a fast pace, so you’ll be able to come back daily for another dose of the day’s buzz.

Here are a few words from Buzz60:
Every day we work hard to deliver the tastiest video snacks that are timely, quirky, a little sassy and always smart. Our news segments are made specifically for our fast-paced world, with an edge and never boring. From a dead cat turned helicopter to Miley’s latest antics, our newsroom loves scouring the web, social media and water cooler convos to find and deliver stories that you’ll want to share with your friends and family. Our team is honored to be YouTube’s November 2013 On the Rise Channel and we have you, our fans and subscribers, to thank. Buzz60 -- Now you know, pass it on.

Since we launched the new comments experience on YouTube two weeks ago, we’ve received a lot of feedback from creators on the increase in comment spam. While the new system dealt with many spam issues that had plagued YouTube comments in the past, it also introduced new opportunities for abuse and shortly after the launch, we saw some users taking advantage of them.

We’ve worked hard to combat the increase in spammy comments and have made a number of updates, including:
  • Better recognition of bad links and impersonation attempts
  • Improved ASCII art detection
  • Changing how long comments are displayed

We know the spam issues made it hard to use the new system at first, and we’re excited to see more of you getting involved as we’ve fixed issues. New features like threaded conversations and formatted comments are coming to life, thanks to you and your fans.

So what's next? We're moving forward with more improvements to help you manage comments on your videos better. Bulk moderation has been a long standing creator request and we'll be releasing tools for that soon. At the same time, we’re also working on improving comment ranking and moderation of old-style comments.

Thanks for sticking with us.

The YouTube comments team

We know you work hard on your videos, and perhaps they don't always get as many views as you'd hoped for. But if you're considering paying someone to increase your view count, you may want to think again. You probably won't get what you paid for.

Views generated by some third-party businesses and services will not be counted on YouTube, and can lead to disciplinary action against your account, including removing your video or suspending your account.

Long-term success on YouTube is based on creating great content and engaging with fans. If you're looking for ways to grow your audience, check out the great tips in our Creator Playbook.

There are also legitimate paid options. YouTube's TrueView solutions offer cost-effective ways to build your audience with many targeting options, along with deep insights into the types of viewers engaging with your videos.

If you're considering a third-party service, proceed with care and find out how they intend to promote your content:
  • Ask where your videos will be promoted
  • Ask about transparency of data and analytics
  • Ask about targeted demographics
  • Ask if they require video views in return for access to services or incentives
Remember that ultimately, you are responsible for your video traffic. If you contract a company that gives you spam instead of views, you pay the penalty, not the company.

We’re trying to keep YouTube an even playing field for all creators like yourself, and to keep the focus on great content rather than quickly accumulating views. The next time you come across a company promising lots of views for cash, please think twice.

To learn more about buying and getting YouTube views through third-party services, check out more information here.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is sharing famous movie quotes from the road, iJustine is sharing her Chipotle order before a flight to NYC, the Special Olympics are sharing highlights from a flag football game and Toby Turner is sharing lessons on how to laugh like a pixie (from the heart of course). These creators are using YouTube Capture to make and share videos with their subscribers on the go, and if you haven’t tried it yet, today’s a great day to give it a shot.

On top of easily recording and sharing videos of any length with your subscribers from your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, YouTube Capture now lets you film, trim, and edit together multiple clips, and add music from the YouTube Audio Library or your iTunes library. You can then share your new video on YouTube and your Facebook, Google+ and Twitter all at the same time.

So vlog on, cut the boring parts with multiclip editing, add cool stuff like your own music and color correction, and share videos with your fans from anywhere. To get started, download YouTube Capture for free, and learn more about today’s updates here.

Behind every great channel are great fans. A few months ago we announced Top Fans, a tool to help you interact with your most engaged viewers. Today we're launching Fan Finder, a new initiative designed to help you introduce and connect your channel to new fans, at no cost to you.

To get started with Fan Finder, just create and upload a video introducing new fans to your channel (more on that below) and then submit it here to Fan Finder.

We'll turn your video into a TrueView video ad, which gives viewers the option to skip after 5 seconds. We’ll show your ad for free across YouTube to connect you with brand new fans. Fan Finder takes into account the interactions that viewers have with millions of YouTube channels in order reach the people who are most likely to engage with your channel.

Ready to get started? Create and upload your ad to your channel, then submit it to Fan Finder.

Here are some tips for creating an effective channel ad:
  1. Keep your channel ad short and engaging: Introduce the viewer to your content; don’t assume they have heard of you or your channel before. Remember, your channel ad will run as a TrueView ad which the viewer can skip after 5 seconds, so get to the point.
  2. Entertain the viewer: When in doubt “show” what your channel is about, don’t “tell”. If you have a comedy channel make sure your ad is funny, if you have a music channel make sure your ad has music. You get the drift.
  3. Aim for a strong message: Keep your channel ad focused on your channel and why viewers should subscribe or check out your content.
  4. Have a clear call to action: What do you want your viewers to do? This should be scripted and annotated in your channel ad. Don’t forget to explain what subscribe means (example: want to see more content? Subscribe here).
  5. Branding matters: Make sure your branding is clear and reiterated throughout the ad. You want viewers to remember your channel.
Check out www.youtube.com/yt/fanfinder for more information and to see some great sample channel ads.

Updated November 12: We know there are issues with spam and abuse in the new comments and we're working hard to fix them. We’ve already made a number of changes in the last 24 hours to reduce spammy comments and bad links, and we have more fixes coming soon.

We know how important comments are to you, and we’re making these improvements quickly so you can continue those conversations with your fans. Stay tuned for updates.

Let’s say you’re enjoying Lindsey Stirling or Epic Rap Battles’ latest video and want to join in the conversation. Would you rather see comments from people you care about (including Lindsey or ERB themselves), or just whoever in the world was last to post?

We told you recently that better commenting is coming to YouTube. Starting this week, when you’re watching a video on YouTube, you’ll see comments sorted by people you care about first. If you post videos on your channel, you also have more tools to moderate welcome and unwelcome conversations. This way, YouTube comments will become conversations that matter to you.

Here’s more detail about the new YouTube comments powered by Google+:

  • Comments you care about move to the top: You’ll see posts at the top of the list from the video’s creator, popular personalities, engaged discussions about the video, and people in your Google+ Circles. You can still see the most recent comments by switching from “Top Comments” to “Newest First.”
  • Join the conversation publicly or privately: You can choose to start a conversation so that it is seen by everyone, only people in your Circles, or just your bestie. Like Gmail, replies are threaded so you can easily follow conversations.
  • Easily moderate comments: If you also post videos on your channel, you’ll have new tools to review comments before they’re posted, block certain words or save time by auto-approving comments from certain fans.

If you're like the majority of people commenting on YouTube, you’ve already connected your account to a Google+ profile or page and can start commenting now. If you haven’t connected yet, you can do it here or learn more here. Remember, you’re in control of how you're seen publicly on YouTube, whether that’s keeping your current YouTube channel name, using your own name, or creating a new one.

Calling all Canadian YouTube creators! We have an exciting development program that we are kicking off - the Canadian Creator Collab Callout! Collaborating with other YouTube creators can be one of the most effective ways to tap new audiences - whether you are Lindsey Stirling, Minute Physics or Walk Off The Earth, collabs mean making friends and finding new fans around the world.

So here’s the deal: tell us a YouTube collaboration idea that you and your other Canadian creators have on this application form (submissions due by November 29th). Selected applicants will receive training on best practices in optimizations, audience development, AND some valuable access to professional studio time and equipment to film your collaboration idea.

To be eligible, you need to be based in Canada and have at least 100 subscribers on each of the channels applying. And, remember, it’s not cool to submit a collaboration idea that includes another channel unless of course that channel is on board and wants to be a part of the application.

Don’t forget the YouTube Creator Playbook has some great tips and information about getting started if you are looking for best practices and strategies to help build your audience on YouTube.

Submissions are due by November 29th, 2013. More information about the program guidelines can be read here. Looking forward to receiving your application!

Update: Creators can submit multiple collaboration ideas as long as each is paired with a different set of channels.

We love sharing knowledge and different fishing tips/techniques with you on a regular basis. Spending quality time with family and friends on the water fishing is one of our favorite pastimes and we've been doing just that on YouTube since 2007. We are finding that more and more people are writing in with questions, as they want to spend more time enjoying our great outdoors and the sport of fishing. Thanks to all your positive feedback and support over the years, our YouTube channel continues to grow. [Being featured as YouTube’s On The Rise partner] is an honor that we would like to jointly share with you as we equally deserve such recognition. Thank you and as always, until next time, good luck and good fishing.

Do you get help from others to manage your channel? We heard from creators that you need better ways to delegate responsibilities to your trusted team members. We started by allowing our creators to add multiple managers to their Google+ page connected channels and, today, we’re announcing a new specialized ‘role’ – the communications manager.

Page owners can now assign the “communications manager” role to people in charge of engaging followers without giving full access to the connected YouTube channel or permission to edit their overall Google+ page appearance. Now you’ll have more control over what your channel managers can access. You can also use this feature to work with new channel collaborators without giving them access to manage your videos.

The communications manager role will have the ability to do some of the following key actions:

Communications managers will not have access to your YouTube channel and will be limited to social interactions on your Google+ page. For instance, these managers cannot work in your video manager, upload content to your channel, view your channel analytics, authenticate the channel for third-party tools, or add or remove managers from your account.

You can compare the three roles available to admins of your channel and corresponding Google+ page to get a better understanding of the various permissions. To start assigning different manager roles, visit the “Managers” tab of your Google+ Dashboard.

Many of you have been asking for more flexibility in distributing and monetizing your content, which is why we worked with a pilot group of partners to launch the first paid channels on YouTube. These are new YouTube channels with monthly subscription fees starting at $0.99, adding even more ways to build audiences and turn your passion into your profession.

Today is the next step in offering you more ways to monetize your content through paid channels, now available to eligible partners in good standing with a channel that has least 10,000 existing subscribers. In addition to the 10 countries where paid channels are already available, you can also create and subscribe to paid channels in Mexico, with more countries launching in coming months. If you’re interested in creating a paid channel and fit these requirements, visit your Account Features page to enable the feature.

All paid channels will continue to have a 14-day free trial, to give your potential viewers the opportunity to explore your content. Viewers can also now discover and subscribe to your channel from YouTube’s mobile website, and we’ll keep adding more devices from which viewers can subscribe.

Just as the Partner Program empowered creators to build great channels over the last six years, we look forward to seeing how you use this additional business model to build your audience on YouTube.

The YouTube Team

On The Rise is a monthly program where we introduce four YouTube partners whose channels drive significant watch time but haven’t yet reached the 100,000 subscriber mark. Thanks to your help, we’ve identified four channels this month who are getting close to crossing that threshold. Our October nominees create engaging videos about their hobbies, which include origami, auto repairs, fishing, and extreme sports.

You can help these partners get even closer to reaching that 100,000 subscriber milestone. Check out their videos below, vote for your favorite here, and one of these candidates will have the opportunity to be featured across YouTube later this month. In addition to your votes, each channel will be evaluated on criteria such as viewer engagement and channel optimization techniques to decide which partner we’ll feature.

In past months, featured On The Rise partners like StanWinstonSchool and CookingAndCrafting have gained subscribers and seen their watch time grow due in large part to your support. This month’s poll will be open until October 10, 5 p.m. PT, so don’t forget to vote for your favorite channel. Check back to see which channel will be featured on October 30.

There’s a lot going on here at YouTube, and we know it’s not easy to keep track of it all. What if you could get your hands on a digest that includes a highlight on fresh, creative uses of YouTube plus the latest in product, programs, and education? That’d be pretty rad, right?

We thought so. Today, we launched the first ever newsletter for creators, called the Creator Pulse. It’s packaged just for you.

If you received it in your inbox, great! We hope you like it. Missing out on the Creator Pulse? Tune in by checking “All YouTube newsletters” at the bottom of this page. If email isn’t really your thing, hold tight - in the future, these newsletters will also be accessible on the Creator Hub.

We’d love to hear your thoughts with the hashtag #creatorpulse.

Congratulations to the entire team at Stan Winston School, our featured “On The Rise” partner for the month. Their videos are in the spotlight on the On The Rise homepage and the YouTube home channel today.

Here are a few words from the folks at Stan Winston School:
Thank you from all of us at Stan Winston School! We're honored to have been selected as a YouTube "On the Rise" Channel and it wouldn't have been possible without the support of our awesome community of Creature FX fans. We hope this spotlight brings even more awareness to the magic behind the movies, and inspires a new generation of artists to create their own fantasy characters. Long live monster making!

The YouTube Creator Academy Crew, recently crazy about “Where Good Ideas Come From."

It’s undeniable: music is pretty powerful. The right song can create a magical moment (and the wrong one can kill the mood in a millisecond). Whatever tone you’re trying to set, your soundtrack is critical.

When you’re uploading a video to YouTube, knowing where to search for the perfect song can be tricky. We do our best to provide creators with tools to enhance their content and to simplify this process, but we wanted to make it even easier to find great music for your videos.

That’s why we’re launching the the YouTube Audio Library today. Any YouTube creator now has access to more than 150 royalty-free instrumental tracks you can use for free, forever, for any creative purpose (not just YouTube videos). You’ll find a link to the library in your video manager and you can browse the tracks by mood, genre, instrument and duration. The tracks can be downloaded as 320 Kbps MP3 files.

If you are making an indie romance, listen to The Engagement

Guitarist Oscar Rodriguez lays down a track for the YouTube Audio Library

As you can see, this project was a whole lot of fun. We searched far and wide for musicians to create tracks for us and ended up finding co-conspirators in multiple places: an acquaintance down in LA, music houses across the country and a well-known music producer in Brooklyn. And it turns out the latter produced albums for Phish and Sean Lennon. So, we’re basically rock stars now (or we felt like them for awhile).

If you’re documenting a road trip, consider Hot Heat

We’d love to hear what you think so we can continue to improve the library’s content and browsing capabilities. And if you know any musicians who may be interested in contributing to the library, let us know.

If you’re making a family video, try Locally Sourced

Hear YouTube comments are getting an upgrade? In the coming days and months, you’ll get better moderation tools and your fans will get a better viewing experience because comments are turning into conversations that matter to them. Comments from you and people your fans care about will rise to the top of the conversation, and you’ll also be able to block specific key words, banish unwelcome voices and pre-approve people who contribute to meaningful discussions.

The features are ready and waiting for you to try on your channel discussion tab today and will roll out across all watch pages and mobile by the end of the year.

Here’s what you need to do to try out the new features today:
  1. Connect your YouTube account to a Google+ page or profile: here’s how
  2. Enable the discussion tab on your channel: here’s how
  3. Try new features to engage your fans like +mentioning them in comments or sharing a video link
  4. Set your channel moderation preferences to see how they work on your discussion tab today. When the new comments roll out across YouTube, your moderation settings will help you save time while improving the conversations around your videos.
After you give the new feature a try, drop in to our YouTube/Google+ integration community and send us some feedback.

We know that behind every great channel are a set of dedicated fans, and we want to help bring you closer to your top fans. This year, at VidCon, YouTube announced the start of a Beta test for a feature called Top Fans -- a set of tools to help YouTube creators identify, understand, and interact with their most engaged and influential viewers. Today, we’re opening the feature to all creators worldwide with at least five thousand subscribers. If that’s you, check it out here or look for the new "Community" tab.

You’ll see the fans table, which shows a ranked view of your most engaged and influential viewers, updated daily. You can sort the table by engagement level (comments, likes, and other public actions) or by number of subscribers, so you can find some potential collaborators! If you've connected your channel to Google+, you can also add viewers into circles and send them a message via Google+.

Speaking of circles, select the insights view to set up an initial Google+ circle of your Top YouTube Fans. Get a ticker of their latest engagement with your videos, making it easy to reply to their comments. See what other videos and channels they’re into, and reach out via Google+ to ask a question, start a conversation, share behind-the-scenes photos, or upload a private video just for them.

This works even better if your fans are also following you on Google+. To help with this, we'll start prompting your top fans when they're watching your videos to follow you on Google+.

A big thanks to our wonderful set of creators who helped Beta test Top Fans. We got a lot of great feedback, and have already responded with some new features, such as the ability to sort the table by the date a viewer subscribed, the ability to click to see additional comments from a given fan, and new ways to help find people to add into your Top Fans circle.

This is just the beginning. We'll keep improving these tools, and would love your feedback. So give it a try and let us know what you think with the "Send Feedback" link. And tell your Top Fans we said hi. :)

The YouTube Creator Academy Crew, recently jamming to “What is a MOOC?

We’re always exploring ways to bring more viewers to your content. As part of this effort, later this year we’ll launch a new feature on YouTube’s mobile apps that will help you reach fans -- even when they’re not connected to the Internet.

This upcoming feature will allow people to add videos to their device to watch for a short period when an Internet connection is unavailable. So your fans’ ability to enjoy your videos no longer has to be interrupted by something as commonplace as a morning commute.

This is part of our ongoing updates to give people more opportunities to enjoy videos and channels on YouTube mobile. Check out the YouTube blog when this launches in November for more details on how this will work for viewers.

The YouTube Team

Ever wanted to feature some videos from another channel on your own? Did a collaboration with another YouTube creator but it’s on their channel? Want to mix the best videos from multiple channels that you own? Now you have more tools to cross-promote other channels and their videos. Check them out below:

Cross-promotion sections
You can now feature any playlist from another channel as a section on your own channel by selecting the “Enter a playlist URL” option when creating a section from a playlist:

When you feature another channel’s playlist, its avatar will be shown along with the playlist title at the top of the section. With our new channel hovercards, viewers can more easily learn more about the channel:

Multi-channel sections
If in addition to showcasing videos, you would also like to feature other channels, then you should consider using our multi-channel sections. Multi-channel sections allow you to turn your channel into a single destination for viewers to access all of the other channels you own or love. Network channels such as the CW, HBO and TheYoungTurks are already making good use of the feature, check them out!

Add a multi-channel section by selecting “Channels” in the “Select content” dropdown when you are adding a new section.

Please join us in congratulating Beth from CookingAndCrafting, our featured “On The Rise” partner for August 2013. Beth’s channel is in the spotlight on the YouTube home channel and the On The Rise homepage today.

Beth hails from Hawaii and has been creating YouTube videos since 2006. She hopes to inspire people to cook their own meals through her fast and easy approach to cooking and baking. If you’re hungry, Beth can show you how to make the best potato soup you’ll ever eat (no really, the best!) and can help you satisfy that sweet tooth with molten butterscotch cakes. You might be feeling creative today, and Beth’s channel can also walk you through some neat crafts - Star Wars fans will love this easy-to-follow tutorial on making a Princess Leia headband. Check out her channel for other fun, family-friendly meal or craft ideas.

Here are a few words from Beth:
I started vlogging in 2006 and as I was vlogging, I would sometimes make a craft while chatting, or take my subscribers into the kitchen with me when making dinner. About three years ago, my sister and I decided that we would open a channel focusing on fast and easy cooking, baking and crafting, sometimes mixing in a little bit of humor and island flavors. I am amazed at how many incredible people from all over the world that I get to meet on a daily basis. I am so thankful to my awesome subscribers and friends who constantly support me through all of my endeavors. You.are.the.best!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
If you’ve enjoyed this monthly blog series and are interested in learning more or participating, we encourage you to visit our On The Rise homepage.
